2 Smoothie Recipes that Make us Smile!

We had the privilege of a special lunchtime and learn session with Culinary Nutrition Educator Holly Shelowitz of www.nourishingwisdom.com last week.HOLLY3

What a delicious experience. We got to taste two smoothies that were beautifully nourishing and beautifully tasting.  Even our non-adventurous eaters in our group smiled with delight!

GINGERFirst up was Holly’s All Year Round Immune Booster:

  • 4 leaves of kale
  • 4 thin slices of ginger root
  • 1 apple
  • lemon
  • 1 1/2 cup of water

*Ginger has a long tradition of being very effective in alleviating symptoms of gastrointestinal distress. In herbal medicine, ginger is regarded as an excellent carminative (a substance which promotes the elimination of intestinal gas) and intestinal spasmolytic (a substance which relaxes and soothes the intestinal tract). Modern scientific research has revealed that ginger possesses numerous therapeutic properties including antioxidant effects, an ability to inhibit the formation of inflammatory compounds, and direct anti-inflammatory effects.

Cinnamonum verumNext up was Holly’s Blueberry Spinach Smoothie

  • 1 cup of fresh or frozen blueberries
  • 1 apple
  • 2 cups of unsweetened almond milk
  • 2 giant handfuls fresh spinach
  • 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon

Did you know that cinnamon can be an effective tool in managing type 2 diabetes?!
